MINA (The Magdalen Island’s Network for Anglophones) was established in 2005, with financial assistance from the QCGN (Quebec Community Groups Network), via Health Canada.  Today the project is being managed by the CHSSN (Community Health & Social Services Network).  The MINA network is overseen by CAMI (Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders). To date, there are twenty-six partners sitting around the MINA table.  The network meets twice annually to address the needs of the ESC (English Speaking Community).  This network has helped bridge the gap between the Anglophone and Francophone communities of the Magdalen Islands.

MINA’s Mission Statement

To promote and improve access to health and social services for the English-speaking population of the Magdalen Islands.

MINA’s Mandate

To bring together key individuals including representatives from local organizations and related institutions and health and social services professionals.

Following the identification and prioritization of the health and social services needs of the ESC, five sub-committees were created to address the needs accordingly:

  • Seniors Issues
  • Drug & Alcohol Awareness & Prevention
  • Chronic Illness & Disease Prevention
  • Communications

Key Successes

  • Development  of a pilot project, creating bilingual residential, intermediate and longterm care services for seniors
  • Part-time coordinator for Centre d’Action Bénévole and Collective Kitchens within the ESC
  • Centre du Jour offered monthly within the ESC
  • Part-time coordination from MDJ’s (Maison des Jeunes) “Overdose of Imagination” project
  • Implementation of various community health promotion programs via the Community Health Promotion Project, such as Friends for Life, 5/30 health challenge, and PIED Program

Results Achieved

By working together as one network, community leaders carry more force, thus being more effective in achieving common goals. The progress of this network has proved to substantially improve and enhance access to health and social services to the English-speaking community (ESC) of the Magdalen Islands.  We now have a strong relationship with the network partners.
